Building an Internal Comms Strategy That People Actually Watch

There's a pretty common assumption out there that internal comms need to be clean and extremely formal in order to be taken seriously. Time-poor leaders often feel like they have to approach video this way to convey their authority.

We really want to outline a different approach here.

Engaging content can still hit all those formal notes, but it just requires a bit of clever planning (and maybe a bit less reading off a prompter).

Distilling the Formal Brief

When we partnered with Specsavers to create their 15-year retrospective video, the initial brief was quite dense. They needed to celebrate a massive milestone for their ANZ region while simultaneously detailing core strategic plans for the years ahead. That's a whole lot of heavy information to convey at once.

Naturally, the easiest path is to just chuck someone in front of a teleprompter and call it a day. Instead, Matt and the team worked together with them to distill that confusing initial brief into a really clear, actionable creative direction.

We utilised a heap of camera movement to keep in line with the theme of momentum. We basically followed multiple business leaders as they walked us through the Specsavers head office. This gave the audience a peek at the inner workings of the business while keeping the energy up.

The final video successfully delivered a highly formal corporate message through a really fun and engaging lens!

Frameworks Over Fluff

When time-poor leaders try to film formal business updates internally, we usually hear the exact same complaint.

Nobody is actually watching them.

This is where a strong video framework come into play. If you just point a camera at a desk, the message gets lost in the boredom. We rely heavily on the "Show, Don't Tell" framework to fix this up. Returning to that Specsavers shoot, we completely avoided dry animated infographics because to be frank, they’re pretty mundane. Instead, we mapped out the core message and let real people tell that story while walking through their actual workspace. Proper planning means a relaxed set, and a relaxed set leads to a professional final product.

You don't need to rely on static slides when you've got passionate people ready to speak.

Building Your Strategy

You bring the strategic vision, and we bring the crew.

By using a full-service production process at Balloon Tree Productions, we take the logistical headache away entirely. This allows you to step back and focus on the parts of your job you're actually paid to do, while we handle the technical execution. Before we even get to the script, we always like to ask if the video could just be an email, ensuring every piece of content has a genuine reason to exist.

If you've got a complex message to share and need to keep it engaging, why not reach out and see how we can make it work for you?. Flick us a message through our contact page to organise a casual discovery chat, or we can grab a Same-Day Quote for you to get the ball rolling.
